Sara Berens is a native of Ohio where she attended Ohio University and received her BFA in painting in 2006. She is currently an MFA candidate at The Ohio State University where she instructs beginning drawing courses within the Art Foundations Department. She has exhibited in Athens and Columbus Ohio and has been the recipient of various awards and grants including the Ohio University Dean's Creative Research Award. Her work is a combination of figures and body fragments appropriated from medical and instructional illustration. She is interested in utilizing these forms to create small scale graphite drawings and image transfers. When searching through these sources she is interested in the exaggeration and awkwardness of the human figure. Utilizing small shifts in her editorial process Berens creates both unease and quietness in the work she produces. The combination of displaced cavities, limbs and piercing of the picture plane, leaves the work open to multiple interpretations.
